Tok, a new entry into the UK Hip Hop scene based in the south west of England, recently released his first album Perspective; a welcome introduction into the mind of the young artist, whose lyrics bring a refreshing and original take on the trials and tribulations of life in the UK as a young adult.
The first time listening to this work is an experience which gently draws in the listener, until they are left hanging on every word. The nineteen-year-old rapper offers a unique blend of shadowy realism tied with a raw display of his own take on life, which defies what is expected of such a young rapper. The minimalism of his music is an ode to the clarity of the verses he offers – this isn’t an artist who needs to shout to make you listen.
One Lion Sound got in contact with Tok to find out a bit about the rapper’s life and to gain a more insightful understanding into his latest work; the words of the album’s creator seem necessary for such a personal venture.
“I'm originally from High Wycombe London but now I'm based in Bude. I started rapping about a year ago, I released a couple of cypher vids with mates and got a surprisingly good response, so I started to take it a bit more seriously.”
The tracks on this work are not at all ‘in your face’, a quality which, together with the relaxed and assured delivery of his verses, adds to the overall impact of the bars on each track.

“Well, I've always been musical.  I've played instruments since the age of seven, but the writing aspect just came out of nowhere. I never sat down and tried to write Hip Hop, one day it just happened. I stared working on a project, which I made and remade over and over again until I released perspective in February.”

Tok describes his album as an introduction; the opening “Hi nice to meet you.  My name's Tok. I'm gonna speak for a while and not stop, until I think that you’re listening, but no fake focus like a high dose of Ritalin” set over a soft crackly beat, guides us through Tok’s latest work in a manner which is raw and wholly intimate.
“I wrote about topics that were personal to me but each track has a wider relevance. I wanted to introduce the listener to my way of thinking and my view point on the world.”

Tok is bringing a fresh vibe to UK Hip Hop and at such a young age, the potential of this rapper is huge. The content of this album speaks wholly for itself, a long rundown of each track will do no justice to the quality of the music. With production from both Tok Himself and Odin B and mixing by Dotz, the quality of this album is remarkable. We can only suggest that you sit down and give this one a thorough listen. With a EP due out on OLS in the near future, Tok is not one to sleep on.
