Motion Enterprise are a true-to-their-roots, straight firing hip hop collective based in Gloucester consisting of Mc’s Kadenza, Farai, Catchy P and Sketchster (who also does the lion share of production, mixing and mastering) as well as DJ Ryno and badboy beatboxer, Stromboli. These boys have been putting in some serious graft for a while now and you may have come across their live show at the Crew Salam tent at Boom Bap and many other festivals this year or even maybe holding their own in any cypher, at anytime, anywhere, with anyone. Which they also seem to have a knack for! Either way, they’ve been hard at it and their much anticipated debut has finally arrived in the form of a 15 track Long Player that definitely deserves your attention. The project kicks off with an intro track where you can hear whispering samples with a distinctly boombap beat straight from the mouth of Stromboli over the top and drifts nicely into the energetic second track ‘Welcome To Our World’ that really sets the standard for the remaining 13 as you hear all members going all out with back to back verses that serve as personal introductions from the 4 MC’s. The following slew of tunes perfectly demonstrate the versatility of the group with each MC donning an intricate, thought out solo track as well as breathing new life into subject matter in their group efforts. A stand out track for us would be Sketchster’s soulful solo offering. Sitting at number 10 in the rotation, the disjointed keys in the beat bring you in as he lets you into his thoughts and gives you a proper look around his mind. This is one to really listen to and take in. There are a couple of riddims that keep getting played over. Namely Catchy P’s solo effort ‘Rag Trade’ that sees him bring that bouncy boombap flow with sharp punches over an equally bouncy boombap beat (produced, of course, by Sketchster) as well as ‘Saw Dust’ in which Kadenza shines through with cryptic and utterly spellbinding lyricism. Another stand out is one of the only offerings on the project that have guest features from outside the Enterprise. ‘Regrets’ has more thought provoking themes delivered by Sketchster and Kadenza alongside Small Town Boredom’s Jpeg and Kenny B. There are very few obvious errors in this project and you can definitely hear the time, care and love that’s been put in through the sincerity and passion that are blatant throughout. We’ve got a lot of love for these guys and we were delighted to hear such a well-rounded, professional release after keeping an eye on the singles, features and beats that have trickled through in the monumentally long run up to the LP being completed. The finished product is embedded below for your listening/downloading pleasure and is available now on a ‘Name Your Price’ basis through the group's Bandcamp. Give what you can or just put in ‘0’ and download it for FREE!! But make the most of being able to do so because you’re going to start noticing these guys everywhere and i'm sure their next project might well come with a (no doubt very reasonable) price tag. You may well have come across Bristol based 'D-Red' before. He's been steadily building his foundations in the scene for some time now and things are really starting to heat up as you can see for yourself in his first visual offering below for his track, 'Just Some Weed Bars...' If your feeling this one then hold tight for D-Red's debut EP dropping soon and if you cant wait for that then you can hear more over at D-Red's Soundcloud and make sure you check back here at OneLion for coverage of his upcoming projects. Jon Phonics is an understated but highly regarded producer who isn't scared of venturing in different directions away from hip hop and has been extremely successful in fusing various electronic styles but is (and has been for some time) firmly routed in the scene and regularly works with the cream of the crop. Jam Baxter is a lyrical sorcerer that has risen to well deserved glory in recent years after a string of excellently delivered projects. He is ⅕ of british hip hop power group Contact Play alongside Mr Key, Dirty Dike, Ronnie Bosh and Edward Scissortongue as well as being ⅓ of Dead Players alongside the likes of Dabbla (LDZ) with Ghostown on the beats. On top of putting out instant classics with both groups, Baxter has released 2 solo projects which have blown us away. The pair first collaborated back in 2010 on Jon Phonics ‘Half Past Calm 2’ album on a banger titled ‘Dark Days’ also featuring High Focus head honcho and extremely talented rhymesmith in his own right, Fliptrix. So here we are, 4 years on and the pair have been back in the lab together cooking up a 4 track EP set for digital release on 20th of this month (August). The project, titled ‘Fresh Flesh’, kicks off with an instrumental intro track that gives you that dark, smooth-synth feel you’d expect to get from a Jon Phonics release with a few very ‘Baxteresque’ samples over the top that marry the two styles together and bring you in nicely. The remaining three tracks boast some of the first new solo material we’ve heard from Baxter for a little while. It’s safe to say, he doesn't disappoint and he comes with his brand of twisted interpretation in a hard hitting style that compliments the relaxing yet dark and somewhat ominous Phonics beats he’s going over.
This release will definitely be enough to keep you excited for the full length Baxter LP which, we’re assured, will be with us before the year is out! Out 20th August 2014 and available to Pre-order direct from High Focus or via iTunes! For those of you who haven't yet noticed, today High Focus head honcho Fliptrix released the first single from his highly anticipated next album 'Polyhymnia' Track entitled Vultures.
